Why swop your broken laptop for a new one when you can just replaced the screen?

With a throw away economy many people now think that it’s just cheaper to purchase a new laptop when they’ve broken the screen of the existing one. That’s not always true. Now a days there are a few companies on the internet that sell replacements for laptop screens. Fixing a laptop that has a broken or cracked screen is easier than one thinks.

Youtube now had quite a few video clips helping you disassemble your laptop, remove and replace the screen, and put it all back to together without having to pay somebody an expensive labour charge to do so. It really depends on you at the end of the day as to whether you feel you’re technically capable for fixing your laptop.

If you’re in the market for a new screen you may consider upgrading your matte screen to a glossy screen which provides a better picture all round. So if you’re in the market for a replacement laptop screen then head over to LCDMart.com.au. They have a wide range of laptop LCD’s to choose from. They cater for all the major manufacturers and their pricing is fairly consistant with what you find on the web. They’re fast and efficient and provide a level of customer service that you deserve.

New installed printer hangs when spooling?

Our geeks often find printers and their printer drives seem to hang at 99% of their spooling and refuse to move on. No matter how much time passes, the job never completes. The manufacturers of Dell and Canon, and in this case the Canon MP272, create software which handles the print job but at the same time send back information to their servers to indicate the level of ink and your print usage.

Now if the firewall was to be switched on and the MP Navigator or Dell equivalent were not be allowed to pass through the firewall, it would hang the queue. In order to print successfully, you either need to switch your firewall off, or add the specific program that handles the ink level monitor as an exception in the firewall. Now everybody knows that switching a firewall off is not the answer, and is certainly not advisable by our geeks, so therefore the 2nd option is your only way forward.

Head over to the firewall in the Control Panel, then select the ‘Exceptions’ panel, and add the program you’d like to have part of the exception list. You may find the program in the regular listing of common programs, however you may want to select the program from the c:\Program Files or c:\Program Files (x86) directory. Once you have selected the restricted program, the firewall should allow the program through, allowing it to communicate via the internet to the manufacturer.

Need your whole computer on a new drive?

We often find that our clients lose their installation disk for their operating system and they’re looking for a computer upgrade to replace the old hard disk. Upgrading your hard disk could be for a variety of reasons, namely: bad sectors are forming, need a larger storage space etc. But without the original disk, it’s not easily possible. However all is not lost…

A free linux based product called CloneZilla allows you to make an exact mirror image of an existing disk or partition onto a brand new drive. It copies byte for byte each file to the new destination. Once copied, all you do is rip out the existing hard disk, and the old operating on the new hard disk should now boot. You may even find that you PC has a new life, as the technologies in the new drives would have evolved since the purchase of your PC.

It is however vital to always keep copies of your operating system installation disk in the case you lose your data completely.

Are laptop hard disks meant to last?

We come across a huge amount of  slow computers, namely desktops and laptops, here on the Sunshine Coast.

Now a slow computer could mean a variety of reasons, namely;

  • the CPU overheating
  • the memory cause be faulty
  • hard disk failing, or fragmented hard disk
  • large windows operating system registry
  • too many runaway CPU intensive processors
  • slow internet connection, and too many toolbar add-ons
  • duplicate anti-virus installations
  • and the list goes on….

We have found that quite a few have been faulty hard disk related issues, where bad sectors form on the disks, and slows the intended 5400 or 7200 RPM of the drive down in order to read the data… then it spins up again.. But certainly laptops seem to have this problem the most. The continuous movement that laptops cause the little drives to wear out.

So, if you’re having problems with your computer, and you need a Geek to rescue you – then call on Buzz A Geek. We’ll be happy to help you if you’re on the Sunshine Coast – Queensland.

Mmm, Outlook crashes … Its’ fault or just another buggy addon?

Recently a client in Nambour had a problem where Outlook would crash. The domino effect then crashed Autocad in the process and with it all the Cad drawings that the client had spent hours and hour on.

He sent the following error message through to us;
AppName: tmas_ol.exe AppVer: 3.5.0.1119 ModName: unknown
ModVer: 0.0.0.0 Offset: 00000000

Our Computer Repairs Geek hunted the problem down to find that the Addon to filter SPAM from the Inbox was causing the error.

So if you suspect that an addon is causing Outlook to crash, then head into Outlook, select from the top menu bar, Tools\Trust Center\Add-ins\Go\ then deselect and/or remove the offending addon. Easy as that! :)

Is your thermal paste dry? :-)

A client of ours on the Sunshine Coast had a problem where his HP Pavilion a5060a machine kept on switching off 3 -4 seconds after being switched on. The computer showed the BIOS screen, and then subsequently switched off before booting up the operating system.

So you do the obvious, replace PSU, look at the CPU, look at the motherboard. Computer repairs can be a rather frustrating process and often leads to second guessing oneself.

It turned out that the paste between the CPU and the FAN had become completely dry, and hence, no heat transfer was taken place between the CPU and the cooling fan. So before you replace every component in your computer, take some time to check how dry the paste is. It’ll save a certain amount of frustration and $$$.
